Sharon Mcgreal Sccc-Slp’s Expertise I am thrilled to have completed the Director of Special Education certification through Northern Illinois University. I have completed courses in collaboration, special education law, director of special education and school finance. I look forward to utilizing my education and experience to enhance to livelihood of special education students. I have been lucky enough to be a Speech Language Pathologist for children with hearing loss, intellectual disabilities and language delays for the past 20+ years. It is a passion that has grown and changed through the years and has allowed me to maintain a love for my job. I have worked with children with all levels of hearing loss, as well as intellectual disabilities from mild to profound. I have extensive experience with cochlear implants. A listening and spoken language learning approach is utilized in my therapy techniques when warranted. I am proficient in ASL. See the Sign Visual Phonics is a system that is implemented as a means of articulation and phonetic awareness. Visual phonics is a series of 46 hand shapes as well as a written symbol. It has been an amazing tool at helping the children with hearing loss not only spell, but realize the sounds in words, as well as improving articulation skills. It is instrumental to increase not only listening comprehension but also spelling and reading abilities. As part of my career history, I co-taught a kind of ‘reverse mainstreamed’ classroom. Staffed with a teacher of the Deaf and myself, we taught fourth and fifth grade district curriculum across all subject areas using Total Communication to a group of hearing and Deaf students. Of the 21 students that were part of that classroom, I am happy to report that 7 of those children have gone on to pursue a career in education, Deaf education, special needs education and/or ASL interpreting. I have also co-founded a Speech Pathologist Networking group for local SLPs working with Deaf/HOH children. This group is an invaluable source of information and camaraderie for all who attend our meetings. I am consistently working to improve myself and expand my career.
